Chapter 12

The Seed of the Tree of Immortality

Tiernon and his comrades spent much of their time in the King’s quarters, laying down the best plan of action to reach the western mountains. It was decided unanimously that they would travel inland via strong ponies. Although sailing around the coast would be much faster, it would leave them at the mercy of mermaids and Kelpies.

King Maccus ordered his blacksmith to make a new sword for Kael and requested that it be the finest in the land. The blacksmith decorated the hilt with the figure of a dragon encircled by its tail. At the end of the hilt, was an iron, hollow circle. This was an unusual engraving for a Celtic sword, but it represented the battle against the swamp dragon, and the healing at the Men-an-Tol. Kael was overwhelmed when the blacksmith presented him with the sword and he said humbly, “I thank you kind Sir. I hope I can honour such a fine gift.”

He swished the sword around wildly, as he admired the light that reflected from the shiny blade, before setting it to rest in its scabbard.

Breanna was pleased for her brother, and she smiled sweetly towards him as she said, “Welcome back Kael. Never again will I let you out of my sight. I swear from this day that I will let no harm befall you again.”

Vaughan smiled to himself as he watched the two siblings talking together. He remembered their younger years when they would quibble over the most nonsensical matters and felt great privilege to witness their bonds growing stronger.

Trahern beckoned to Tiernon, “I think it is a good time for my people to return to our land. I will take you to the stone, but no one else must witness the secret place. I suggest the rest of you wait here for our return.”

Tiernon looked in bewilderment as he asked, “Is that necessary? You are among friends.”

Trahern thoughtfully replied, “I do not wish to insult anyone, but who knows what may happen. I want to keep the hiding place a total secret. Should disaster strike, at least I might have the chance of returning the stone back into hiding, lest your quest fail.”

Tiernon gave a look of respect as he replied, “That is a wise decision. I agree. We shall go at once. The rest of you enjoy the hospitality whilst we are gone, for when we return you must be ready to leave.”

The Bucca said their goodbyes to their newfound friends. It was a sad occasion for some, and there was lots of hugging and shedding of tears.

Tiernon set off with Trahern on two strong ponies. The Bucca tribe made their way on foot, and before long, the two horsemen were a long way ahead and soon reached the mines.

Trahern was the first to dismount and scurried off through an entrance that Tiernon had not seen before. He found it difficult to squeeze through as it was not intended for full-grown men. The entrance led to a narrow tunnel that was uneven with jagged walls.
